2011-2012 News

BPS Instrumental Music Festival at BLS May 29th from 11:30 to 6:30

This annual festival, featuring top music students from all the Boston Public Schools, will be hosted by the BLS Visual and Performing Arts Department for the first time this year. Visiting students will join BLS instrumental musicians for afternoon rehearsals and a festival concert starting at 6:30 p.m. Volunteers will be needed throughout the day, particularly at snack and dinner breaks for the students. The festival concert will be free, families and friends are all welcome to attend.

BLS Big Band performed in the Gold Medal Showcase at the Hatch Shell

BLS Big Band members were treated to this special experience on Sunday, May 13th.

BLS Show Choir, Pizzazz, Wins a Bronze Medal

The BLS Show Choir, Pizzazz, won a bronze medal at the Eastern Show Choir Festival, held in Waltham on March 31st. Congratulations!

Concert and Choral Festival Results

At the March MICCA Concert and Choral Festival, the Concert Band won a bronze medal and the Concert Choir, Concert Strings, Junior Band, and Wind Ensembles each won silver medals.

Five BLS Students Win Globe 2012 Scholastic Art Awards

Each year students from the BLS Foundations of Art and AP studio art classes taught by Mr. Harris submit work to the Globe Scholastic Art Competition. Judges award gold key, silver key and honorable mention to student art work in different categories including painting, photography, mixed media and drawing. Congratulations to BLS student winners Joseph Soto (gold key/photography), Sandy Hoac (silver key/painting), Peter Kadzis (silver key/mixed media), Kadine Stephens (silver key/painting), and Hadley Price (honorable mention/drawing).

BLS Big Band Picks Up Another Gold Medal

The BLS Big Band received a gold medal at the MAJE state jazz finals on Saturday, March 24th. Outstanding musician awards went to Willens Jean-Jules on trumpet, Harry Xue on alto sax and Matt Pitts on bass.

The BLS Big Band won an honorable mention at the Berklee Jazz Festival on Saturday, March 10, the Judges Choice Award went to Matt Pitts.

BLS Big Band Wins Two Gold Medals

The BLS Big Band won a Gold Medal at the IAJE Cape Cod Jazz Festival competition on Feb 29, and will be travelling to the IAJE state-wide competition later this spring. Outstanding musician awards were given to Willens Jean Jules, Harry Xue, and Matt Pitts, and Matt Pitts received the MVP Award for Division 1. The Big Band also received a Gold Medal at the Norwood Classic jazz competition in February. Congratulations to all the BLS jazz musicians!

BLS Theatre Company presents two nights of one-act comedies

Come see some of BLS Theatre Company's rising stars in this year's one-act comedies. Aurelia Paquette, II; Anna Baronas, II; and Martha Roberston, II, are directing I'm A Teenager Get Me Out of This Family by Jim Garvey and Things Fall (Meanwhile) by Barton Bishop. The performances are November 18 at 3:00 pm and November 19 at 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
