Join BLS Friends of the Arts today!

Congratulations to all the Chorus, Bands and Orchestras that competed last weekend.
The Concert Choir , Concert Strings and Symphonic band won Silver Medals at the MICCA Festival. The Wind Ensemble received a Gold Medal at the same festival. The Wind Ensemble will be performing at Symphony Hall on Saturday, April 11 at 1pm as part of the MICCA Stars at Symphony Showcase.
Congratulations to the BLS Big Band for wining a Gold Medal at the State Finals last weekend in Framingham.

Junior District Auditions
FOA is looking for 1-2 parent chaperones to ride along on the buses for Junior District Auditions on Saturday January 31, 2015 from 8am-1:00pm (approx). Please meet at BLS that morning, ride along as chaperones on the buses, and at the auditions, and the return trip to BLS. Please contact Christina Yee to volunteer as a chaperone at email@example.com.
Pre-Holiday Concert Art Exhibition and Percussion Performance
There will be a pre-Concert art exhibition on the art floor starting at 5:30pm on both Thursday and Friday this week so that parents can check out the visual art work that our students having been doing for the first half of the year. There will also be a special pre-concert percussion performance of Linus and Lucy by the BLS percussion ensemble on Friday evening at 6:15pm. Hope to see you there.
We still need 4-5 volunteers on Friday, Dec. 19th (6-10 pm) to work the doors at the Holiday Concerts. Please volunteer to help make these concerts run smoothly and support our students! Please contact Christina Yee firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are also asking for donations of water - cases of bottles to sell and jugs for the performers.
The concerts begin at 6:30 pm each night and celebrate the incredible talent of our BLS musicians. The program order is:
Suggested donations are $10 adults, and $5 students and seniors, with a maximum family donation of $25. Donations are voluntary and no one will be denied admission. Funds raised through this event make a real difference in the quality and quantity of arts programming that the BLS Visual and Performing Arts Department is able to provide to our students.
* Parent volunteers are not asked for voluntary donations for admission to the concert on the night they volunteer.
BLS Senior Rachel Guen Performs with All National Honors Orchestra
Congratulations to senior Rachel Guen who recently performed with the All National Honors Orchestra at The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville Tenessee. She was seated in the fifth seat in the first violin section, truly an awesome player. She will be performing as a soloist next Thursday evening with the BLD Concert orchestra as part of our upcoming Holiday Concerts.
On November 22nd, BLS sent 78 musicians to audition for the Eastern District Senior Festival at Milton High School. 30 students were accepted into the festival, 15 with All-State recommendations. Congratulations to Selina Banerjee, Richard Dang, Tatyana Fonseca, Elizabeth George, Joseph Griffith, Nathan Hermida, Cole Johnson, Kristina Paul, Amy Pham, Jules Schellenberg, Chengfeng Shao, and Victoria Wu for acceptance into chorus; Roger Cawdette, Eric Chen, Frances Choi, Jehan Diaz, Rachel Guen, Jacquelyn Ho, Peter Wang, and Leland Wu for acceptance into orchestra; Samuel Ding, Nensi Gjata, Alex Hsia, Jasmin Liu, Anna Peng, Kevin Truong, Allen Yang, Mark Zhang, and Shirley Zhou for acceptance into band and Haniu Ren for acceptance into jazz band. Congratulations to Roger Cawdette, Eric Chen, Frances Choi, Jehan Diaz, Rachel Guen, Nathan Hermida, Jacquelyn Ho, Jasmin Liu, Kristina Paul, Anna Peng, Amy Pham, Haniu Ren, Jules Schellenberg, and Allen Yang for receiving All-State recommendations. Congratulations to all who auditioned, they all had a strong showing and made BLS proud!
This concert is on December 6 at 5pm at Berea Seventh Day Adventist Church in Dorchester. All are invited to attend, admission is $5.00. December FOA Meeting and Volunteer Opportunities
Please join us for our Monthly FOA Meeting on Wednesday, December 3, 6:30-8 pm on floor 1A of the arts wing. Upcoming events such as the Holiday Concerts will be discussed.
Calling all Treble Choir Families for December 10th field trip.
This year the Holiday Concerts are on Thursday, December 18 and Friday, December 19. We need your help for this wonderful two night event!
Volunteers are not asked for a ticket donation for that night's performance. There are many ways to volunteer, and still be able to see your student perform. Please contact Christina Yee at email@example.com to volunteer.
The BLS Friends of the Arts is accepting entries for the 2014 Holiday Concerts program cover contest. There is $100 first prize and two $50 runner up prizes. Runner up artwork will also be featured in the program.
The winning entry will be seen by thousands of BLS community members.

The contest is open to all BLS students.

Reminder - BLS Theatre Presents Comedy One Acts this weekend
Upcoming - "Sing Joy!" A Christmas Concert featuring the BLS Gospel Choir - Dec. 6 at 5pm
Please support the FOA Program Book We are continuing to coordinate the Program Book that is produced for the Holiday Music concerts, Guild Drama, Spring Music nights, Spring Musical and Fall Drama. In total we expect our program books to reach over 7,000 audience members. The revenue from the program book ad sales directly support the Fine and Performing Arts at BLS. BLS Friends of the Arts Meet & Greet Potluck
The BLS Friends of the Arts Meet & Greet Potluck, will be held Wednesday, October 1 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Black Box Theater, in the Arts wing.
Join us for something to eat and the chance to meet members of the BLS Arts faculty, including the music, theater and visual art teachers. FOA will provide refreshments. Parents are welcome to bring beverages or dessert. Everyone is welcome!
The second part of the evening will include a chance to hear updates from Mr. Pitts, and find out information on school events and the many ways that parents can get involved. The Friends of the Arts is a parent group that supports and advocates for the music, visual art and drama programs at Boston Latin School. Please RSVP by 9/29 to Christina Yee if you can attend, so we can get an accurate count for food.
Also, as you may have heard at one of the Open Houses or the August Potluck, the BLS Arts Department is considering changing the dates for the Spring Music Concerts. We will be discussing this further at our next few meetings. Please join us as well as take the attached poll and let us know what you think. Spring Concert Poll The December Holiday Concerts dates are Thursday 12/18 and Friday 12/19. These will not change.
Another note: Thursday Afternoon Jazz Band begins meeting on 10/9. They meet Thursday from 2:30-4. See Mr. Pitts for more information.

Thanks to all who attended the summer FOA meeting/BBQ held August 14, in the Pitts Family backyard. It was the best attended, over the past years, with good hospitality, amazing food, great conversation, and lots of sharing of information. Just a few notes from the meeting listed below:
THE FOOTBALL PEP BAND is requesting additional band members, such as Tenor Sax, Trombones and Flutes. This group focuses on fun POP music, as well as gets to travel with the team and cheerleaders. Minimal experience necessary. For additional information, contact Mr. Pitts, or come to FOOTBALL BAND CAMP August 26-28, 2014, from 10:00am-3:00pm.
Reminder that FOA meetings are from 6:30-8:30pm on the first Wednesdays of each month. Please consider joining us as we help support our children and the faculty, also after many years of wonderful service, Mary Carney's last child has graduated and we need a Secretary.
